Redefining Landslide Dynamics: An Exciting Postdoctoral Opportunity in Prague

Are you a geoscientist passionate about how landslides shape our world? Charles University in Prague is currently seeking a motivated researcher for a unique postdoctoral position that moves beyond viewing landslides simply as natural hazards, instead exploring them as fundamental drivers of landscape evolution and the global carbon cycle.

The project you will be involved in, titled “Redefining Landslide Dynamics: Landslide-Driven Divide Migration and Carbon Sequestration,” is funded by the Czech Science Foundation (GACR) and led by Dr. Sumit Das.

The Research: Beyond the Hazard

While landslides are often studied for their destructive potential, this research investigates their role as “sculptors” of mountainous terrain. The project is structured around three core scientific work-packages:

  • Drainage Divide Migration: Quantifying how landslides drive the reorganisation of river networks and the movement of drainage divides.
  • Thermal Stress Modelling: Developing a mechanically grounded Thermal Stress Landslide Susceptibility Index that integrates diurnal thermal cycles and fracture density.
  • Sediment Pulse: Investigating how landslide-induced sediment pulses might act as a significant, yet poorly understood, pathway for carbon burial.

The Role and Adventure

The successful candidate will lead one or more of these work packages using advanced remote sensing, GIS, and numerical modelling. Beyond laboratory and computational work, this role includes the opportunity to conduct fieldwork in the Alps and/or the Himalayas, providing hands-on experience in some of the world’s most challenging and dynamic mountainous terrains.

Candidate Profile

We are seeking applicants who hold a PhD in Geology, Geomorphology, Remote Sensing, or a related field of Earth Sciences. Key requirements include:

  • Proficiency in scientific programming (Python, MATLAB, and/or R).
  • Expertise in GIS and multi-sensor satellite data analysis.
  • A proactive, creative mindset capable of leading research tasks.
  • Willingness to participate in rigorous fieldwork.

Offer and Benefits

  • Salary: 60,000 CZK gross per month.
  • Duration: One-year initial contract, with a possible two-year extension.
  • Environment: A full-time research position within a dynamic, international department at one of Europe’s oldest universities.
  • Professional Growth: Support to attend international conferences and access to soft and hard-skill training offered by the University.

How to Apply

The application deadline is January 20, 2026, with a start date no later than June 1, 2026. We require submission of a motivation letter, CV with publications, PhD certificate (or evidence of an upcoming defence), and two recommendation letters.

Please review the official job posting here and submit your application according to the instructions provided.
