Call for abstracts: EGU27 session on data-driven and physically-based landslide hazard modelling

The call for abstracts for the EGU General Assembly 2027 (Vienna, Austria & online, 4–9 April 2027) is now open. Our group is convening session NH3.2 – Integrating data-driven and physically-based approaches in landslide hazard modelling, organised by the Horizon Europe Twinning project TWINSLIDE. We warmly invite you to submit an abstract.

Why this session?

Landslides rarely occur as isolated events, nor can they be fully understood through a single methodological lens. As climate change and human activities alter environmental forcing, assessing landslide hazards requires capturing physical processes across scales, from micro-scale geomechanics to slope stability and catchment-wide hazard chains. At the same time, data-driven methods, remote sensing and machine learning offer powerful new tools for spatial and temporal prediction, though often at the cost of physical explainability.

This session aims to bridge that gap. We are looking for contributions that show how coupling empirical data, physics-informed statistical frameworks, and geomechanical models can yield robust, transparent hazard forecasting.

Topics

We welcome submissions on, but not limited to:

  • Bridging geomechanics-based slope stability with broad-scale susceptibility and hazard assessments
  • Integrating machine learning with physical process understanding, including explainable AI and physics-informed data-driven methods
  • Process chains and cascading hazard interactions across the landslide lifecycle, especially under non-stationary climate and environmental forcing
  • Uncertainty propagation and information loss when scaling models from slope to catchment

Format and publication opportunity

NH3.2 is an oral + poster session. Contributions to the session will be considered for later publication as full papers in a special issue of the Copernicus journal Natural Hazards and Earth System Sciences (NHESS).
